It's not stuffed or binhexed. When I compacted it, it wound up being 500k
larger than the original. It will be binhexed only if enough people
require it to be binhexed (for now, download as binary).

The site may be on/off for the next week due to local system and network
upgrades. The ftp site is a Quadra 950 running ftp and gopher software.
Please read the online info. It's still an experimental site.

Stuffit Expander (freeware) will expand Applelink packages. I haven't done
it myself, but the ABOUT box and README say it will.

Also, if you use Stuffit Lite, there is a translator (Translations menu) for
AppleLink packages...you can either compress or decompress.

Since I am starting to acquire some scriptable applications (which are very
cool), I would really like to be able to associate scripts with function
keys.
That is, specify a particular script that I want executed when I hit a
function or command key, perhaps on an application-specific basis. As
scriptable applications become more numerous, this will be an increasingly
desirable thing.

Are there any free/share/payware products that accomplish this?

Several software updates are now available on Applelink. These include:

MAC HARDWARE SYSTEM UPDATE 2.0 (700k)
SOUND MANAGER 3.0 (80k)
COLORSYNC 1.0.3 (60k)
QUICKTIME 1.6.1 (750k)

File sizes are approximate and are the size of the downloads, not of the
reconstituted programs. As of this time they are not yet posted to ftp.apple.
com. Given the cost of Applelink, it might be worth waiting.

Is it possible to print Greek letters in bold using the symbol font? What I
see on my screen (bold) is what I get from the laser printer (plain),
presumably because the printer has the symbol font in ROM, so the truetype
version is ignored. Can this be circumented? (Would renaming the font
help?) Please respond to me directly (sorry if this is a FAQ).

I have had this problem too. When connecting my PB 180 to our companies
LocalTalk net it took sometimes minutes to restart, sometimes it would just
hang there, sometimes it would restart immediatelly.
Recently my PB 180 master board has been replaced to fix an unrelated problem
and guess what......the restart problem is gone !   :-)  :-)

I just got the Hardware System Update 2.0 (from the Washington Apple Pi
bulletin board), and blew myself out of the water when the new Sound
Manager (v3.0) loaded. Unimplemented trap. On my relatively vanilla IIci?
And not on Leslye's heavily modified II? How rude!

I narrowed the problem down to the DaynaFile (which Leslye doesn't have).
I try to stay current, so the DF ROM is 4.1 and the extension is of the
3.01 persuasion.

Since the DF medallion appeared before Sound Manager's, I tried renaming
the thing "xx DaynaFile" so it'd load later than SM. Sonofagun, it seems
to have worked. At least I can boot. And the DF works.

You folk with DaynaFiles might take heed.

Does anybody know of a utility that will create a System 6-style desktop
on a System 7 volume?

 I know, you are probably thinking, "Why would anyone want to DO such a
silly thing?" Well, if you are mastering a CD-ROM, it needs to have
desktop files compatible with both System 6 and System 7. Most CD-ROMs are
images of a hard disk volume, and in order to get the required desktop
files, you have to mount the source hard disk under both System 6 and
System 7 and let the Finder do its thing (i.e., create the desktop files).
Unfortunately, most devices that make CD-ROM one-offs work best off of a
fast machine, like a Centris 650, which, yes, that's right, can't run
System 6 at all. So, to make the master, you currently need a fast System
6 capable machine, and they are getting scarce. Hence, the need for the
aforesaid utility.

Hello Dave,

I think the simplest solution is to run softpc on your mac ( a demo version
is probably floating around, just ask archie .. ) and use the backup
program of MS-Dos. Although this doesn't use datacompression, the process
is very straightforward :

i) type the backup command on your working PC ( -:) : the PC that works /
is working for you / you work on ??? -:) )
ii) restore it from within softpc on a macintosh network disk ( restore to e:
)

Just remember to pop in the floppies in the right order !

This way I transferred the John Pugh quicktime movies at ftp.apple.com;
easier than using arj, pkzip, etc. I think that compression is only useful
if you have a file with a size of between 1 and 2.5 Mb; this way the
archive doesn't have to be split up.

What is Error Type 15? and what is its connection with the Sleep option?

Actually, if you look at linked formulas in Excel, the apostrophe is used
as a delimiter for the file name. My guess is that Word also uses the
apostrophe as a delimiter for the file name in the link. Makes perfect
sense to me. If you tried to link the Excel file to another Excel file, my
guess is that it would also fail if the name had an apostrophe.

Subject: EXCEL 3.0 BUS ERROR

Yet another chapter in the "progress" of Microsoft, I suppose...

I'm running MS Excel 3.0 on a Quadra 950, 32 bit addressing, System
7.0.1(dot), Ethernet, Speedyfinder 7, a few other inits.  Sometimes during
the course of my work, for *no apparent reason* Excel hangs up.  It's never
happened when I was doing anything, so it's kind of hard to troubleshoot.
I'll be looking at something on the document, not moving the mouse,
anything, and a system "Bus Error (Restart?)" window will show up. Clicking
"Restart" won't work; I have to push the reset button.  It only seems to
happen after Excel has been running for a while (>10 min), and after some
period of inactivity.  It's also not repeatable.  It only happens every so
often.  This makes it awfully hard to find the conflict via normal means
like removing inits.

Any ideas?  (Other than saving every two minutes, thanks)

Or should I just go back to Excel 2.2 (which *never* crashed) ?

If you are willing to approach things with a different attitude, there is a
neat program available at sage.cc.purdue.edu in a directory named
/pub/mac/RevRdist.sea.hqx.  This program will sync a workstation's
harddrive with a master folder on a file server.  It does not keep anyone
>From tampering with the files on the hard drive, but rather comes in after
the fact and restores things.  It even restores icon and folder locations.

I have been installing this over the last few weeks and can report that the
configuration file takes some getting used to, but that it is very
effective at making my lab macs all alike with little day-to-day
administration.  A tribute to the effectiveness of RevRdist is the
existance of complaints that one can't get by with leaving things on the
hard drive anymore, and the lack of "please restore..." requests.  (We want
them to instead use their folder on the server.)  We plan to extend
RevRdist campus wide by the end of the summer.

Perhaps the neatest thing is that I have put an alias in the apple menu,
"Update Hard Drive", which I have instructed my clients to use when a mac
seems to need fixing.  I have a boot floppy to use when a mac has been
damaged too much.

A companion program /pub/mac/testing/rrhelper.sea.hqx will enforce settings
(map location, user name, hard disk name, desktop pattern, default printer,
etc...  I am just starting to use this.  I have run into a few
configuration problems, but I expect that it will be equally great when I
get it working.

Source is included with RevRdist, and the Dale Talcot has released the
program into the public domain.

Can you tell that I am very happy with RevRdist?

ouputting to QD.  My (interim) solution, is to use Freedom of Press
between PM and my QD devices.  I have some quibbles with that too, you
have to play mondo hijinx to get FoP to download "real" PostScript fonts
for the basic 17, instead of using the (really lousy) outline they
supply...

I'm a little confused, Gary--are your icons disappearing or are they
becoming generic? If the latter, I experienced this problem on my
boss' IIsi just last week. He, too, is running system 7.1 and Auto-
Doubler. We're still not *entirely* sure what happened, but our
current thinking, and that of our computer department personnel,
is that the problem was an interaction between AD and Virtual
Memory, which it turned out had been inadvertently left on and
had eaten up almost all of the 80mg HD. We wound up having to trash
and reinstall the system (about four times, in the end, I believe),
after getting rid of AutoDoubler. Afterwards, most, but not all,
of my boss' files were recoverable.

Let me also take this opportunity to thank all those folks who
sent me suggestions about this weird problem--I tried to get back
to everyone but I think I'd accidentally deleted a couple of
messages before I started replying to them.

Again, this is just our theory about the cause of the problem. I'm
open to ideas and suggestions tending either to confirm or deny it.

I experienced the same problem a few weeks ago, tried all the
Autodoubler utilities as well as rebuilding the desktop,
Norton utilities and numerous other tricks.

Bottom line, none worked, I ended up re-expanding my entire
disk (thankfully I had space) and then turning Autodoubler
back on to re-compress. Fixed the problem!

I don't know whether this situation applies to you, but I think I have
finally nailed down the cause of one kind of disappearing icon. I have
two hard drives -- an internal and an external. The internal drive
contains my System Folder. Applications and documents are distributed
between the two drives, and I have aliases of several frequently used
application in the Apple Menu Items folder. This is under System 7.1 on
a Centris 650, but I am fairly certain that the same thing happened on
my now-retired Mac II under 7.0.1*.

Consider what happens when you rebuild the desktop. The drive containing
the System Folder is the one whose desktop is rebuilt first. In the
course of rebuilding the desktop, the Finder examines the aliases in the
Apple Menu Items folder. The external drive, which contains the
applications to which these aliases refer and from which they inherit
their icons, evidently is not yet mounted, hence unavailable to the
Finder. Therefore the Finder records the generic icon for these aliases.

Now the Finder mounts the external drive, and rebuilds its desktop. When
it comes to the applications whose aliases were on the internal drive,
the Finder sees that an icon has already been recorded for them.
Unfortunately, this is the generic icon.

The only solution I know of is to find the items that have lost their
icons through this unfortunate interaction is to apply Save-A-BNDL
(probably in the info-mac archive). The obvious system-level fix would
be for Apple to modify the Finder so that all volumes are mounted before
desktop-rebuilding begins.

Having an LC III, I think I know what your problem is with the shrinking
screen.  It seems apple had put in the options of the Monitors control
panel an option for 640x400 resolution.  This resolution will chop of 80
pixels off your 14" Mac display resulting in the bands of black you saw.

To fix it, go to the Monitors control panel, press the option key and click
on "Options..." and select "Mac Hi-Res Display from the list to the right of
the window which appeared.  Ok the changes and restart.  It should be back
to normal!

I have a client who recently got an LCIII and is having a hard time with
her mouse. (The new ADBII Mouse) What is happening is that when she
presses down on the button (and it is not a very hard press, becase I
have experimented with the mouse, and reproduced her results with a fairly
light touch) the front portion of the mouse (this is on a slightly spongy
mouse pad, but there were some of the same problem just on the desk)
would depress in such a way as to make it very hard for the rollerball to
move, thereby causing the cursor to not move in the horizontal plane. ie:
she would go select a menu but then could not scroll down to select a menu
item.
My question is, has anyone seen this problem before, or is this mouse
defective and in need of a replacement?

1.  If you are only using the DEMO of MacPassword, you cannot
access MacPassword's High Security feature. This is the one

works on that principle.

Is there any mac system accounting software out there that will keep track of
how macs are utilized? I'm thinking of a program that will run in the
background and give me information such as: hours of processor usage; hours of
connect time; instances/hours of a particular application program use etc. I

I have been planning for 6 months or so to upgrade my memory in August (is
this perfect timing or what?!).  I have two computers and must choose one
to upgrade (financial limitations) so I can work with a large number of
applications open at once (I have been using virtual memory but find it
slow). The computers are a IIci and an LCIII.  Both sport 8MB ram and an
FPU.  The IIci does not have a cache card.  Both running 7.1.  The IIci has
an 80MB hard drive, and the LCIII a 220MB hard drive.

Which should I upgrade to 20MB the IIci or LCIII?  It would involve buying
a 16MB for the LCIII and four 4MB for the IIci.

I am also willing to buy a cache card for the IIci, whether its memory is
upgraded or not.  I was told that a 1MB cache card is standard.  Is there
anything in particular I should get for the cache card???

Where would be the best place to purchase this equipment (there are an
infinite number advertising in the back of the magazines...)

A Macintosh lab that I set up is used by novice users who get lost very
easily. I want to install something like At Ease to make things a little
easier for the users and keep them from getting into things they don't
need to look at.

However, I tested At Ease 1.0 and found that it is not adequate. In
particular:

- A shared copy of At Ease cannot be installed on the server. The lab
consists of 21 Mac Classic II computers all running software from a
central Netware server via ethernet cabling. I want to install one copy of
At Ease (or at least just one copy of the At Ease Items folder) that all
machines acccess. That way, I don't have to run around to 21 computers
every time an icon needs to be added, deleted, or changed. I tried
aliasing the At Ease Items, but that didn't work.

- Users either have full access to the Finder or no access at all. Users
need to be able to do some basic file management like copying, deleting,
and renaming their files but shouldn't have access to all of the Finder
features. At Ease should include a cut down version of the Finder in
application form or the Finder needs to be At Ease aware and be
configurable to different levels by the system administrator.

Until these issues are addressed, I can't recommend At Ease for lab use.

Does anyone know of any good alternatives to At Ease? Is a new version of
At Ease in the works that will solve these problems?

Here are some questions; ignore any you think are too broad.

    1) Here's a broad one to start out with: is MessagePad anything more
       than a glorified steno pad?  What features make MessagePad
       impossible to live without. I currently do not own a Mac or
       other home computer, so that should limit the scope.

The MessagePad is to stenopads what computers are to calculators. Its ability
to recognize both handwriting and geometric shapes makes it a "living" steno
pad, and its ability to communicate with both computers, faxes, networks and
other Newtons makes it much more than a Casio BOSS. It's a whole new way of
thinking. The Siemens folks are coming out with a cellular phone that
incorporates Newton technology...so there's an even larger group of
abilities.
It depends on how you organize your life now. The MessagePad consolidates all
of that for me. It may not for you.

    2) How many PCMIA(?) slots are in the Newton ? I know that
       memory cards will be available, as well as "infrared communicator"
       cards? Is there ample space for expansion?

There is only one slot, and to correct you: the MessagePad's ability to have
infrared communication is taken care of by a different built in port (for
"beaming". The PCMCIA cards are powered and save the info that's on them when
you remove them from the MessagePad (lithium cells - very thin). You may be
thinking of Apple's Messaging Card that provides paging capabilities.

    3) How much infomration can be held. One of the magazines I read
       said a few pictures and about 100 piece of information in
       the base model. That seems low. What is your experience?

That is low. The base model has 4 megs of ROM and 640 K of RAM. I haven't
filled mine up yet, and I transferred my TouchBase contact list (1,400 names
adresses etc)

    4) How is the handwriting recognition. Apple was having problems at some
       recent trade shows...

It depends upon how much time you are willing to spend teaching it. It all
boils down to it's learning to recognize your chicken scratches. Another
tester
had the toughest time getting it to recognize her name. It got everythin else,
but finally got her name after a few hours of use. It's actually better at
cursive than it is at block letters. Strange but true.

    5) Are the first models going to be so featureless as to
       be useless 6 months from now when new models come out? If I buy
       now will I be stuck with a limited architecture or will the
       first MessagePads run the fancy applications that will come out?

The PCMCIA slot will hold the key to Newton's first model's future. The cooler
those cards are, the cooler Messagepad will be.

I have just scanned my hidden files with DupLocator, only to find a Desktop DF
files of 711K.  Is this normal?  Also the Desktop DB is 96k and Desktop 61k.
I am using vanilla System 7 with about 20 extensions (included are control
panels etc...) and 10 MB of RAM on a Mac LC.  What is the maximum normal size
for these desktop files?  I have rebuilt my desktop and zapped my PRAM quite
frequently as crashes were happening before these rebuildings.
TIA (BTW did you ever notice the files that are restricted use on a SUN
network machine have internet Acronyms written in their names?  Which came
first, the acronyms or the files supplied by UNIX? :-))

The PAL SIMM's will work in a //ci.  These are what I believe are
called parity SIMM's.  You will not get to use the parity capability
(I don't understand this feature either), but the SIMM's will work
just fine in a //ci (It is WONDERFUL to have 16MB or more of Ram on a
//ci).

With the latest round of price reductions for the powerbooks, the time is
right
to upgrade my PB100. I am trying to decide between getting a PB145B and
PB160. Some questions:

 - Does the grey-scale enhance the screen a lot? Enough to justify a $200-250
   price differential. Does it cause more problems with submarining (I use the
   PB as a primary computer - 8-10 hours a day; Graphics about 5% of the time)

 - Is the 160 as easy to upgrade (install memory, 120M drive, modem) as the
   PB145 (I have average engineering skills). Also, are Quantum 120M drives
   faster than the conner drives (?) that the PB come with? (I amn planning
   to get a 4/40, and upgrade). On a related note, are PB145B/PB160 relatively
   easy to open or should I turn to a authorized dealer for such upgrades?

 - Do both lose RAM disks when turned off?

 - Does the 145B and the 160 have similar battery life?

 - Any other major differences, apart from the video out and microphone, which
   are only of secondary interest to me.

 - What's the latest on the rumor's on the new PB165 and the demise(?) of
 145B.
   Any dates, prices, specs?

As I understand it a Japanese factory that makes a resin used in the
manufacture of Ram chips burned down. However, the NYT reports that
major Japanese chip producers say they have plentiful supplies of the
resin (no just-in-time inventory control here, apparently) and are
actually ramping up their output of 4 meg simms to meet increasing
demand (so the price of these chips may fall soon). The NYT also
reported last week that in the US RAM prices rose on news of the fire.
But they should drop back pretty soon. Give it 'til the end of this
week.

So if PC prices do go up it probably won't be because of RAM prices.
And my guess is that if Compaq doesn't raise its prices, no-one else
will.

Everyone on GEnie now--since GEnie raised its prices by getting rid of
Basic*Services, has access to Internet email at the same cost as
intra-GEnie email.

Just addess mail to him at <genieid>@genie.geis.com.  To address email

I've been having problems printing (or doing anything else) with PostScript
files.  I have two types of files; those generated from Mac apps such as Word
and MacDraw, and others of unknown origen ftp'd from the network.  Let me try
to
explain what I've tried so far and the results.

1. Using LaserWriter Utility (4.something?) with an Apple LaserWriter IIf,
using
LaserWriter extension 7.1, I've tried printing both types of files.

 a. With Mac-generated files, I get the error message "No output was returned
>From the PostScript printer, so no output file was created."

 b. With other files, I get the first page of output, but a PostScript error
 log
which reads "[Error: typecheck: OffendingCommand: get]%% %%[Flushing rest of
job
..]

2. I downloaded SendPS from sumex-aim, but it was a very old version, and gave
the following errorsin this order: "Couldn't open printer driver: LaserWriter"
and "Chooser error: couldn't determine name of printer."

3. I tried reading either type of file using Word 5.1.  When opening, I would
get a dialog dox saying "Converting EPS file, 0% done," then an error "Invalid
data in conversion file."

4. I tried uploading the file to a Unix system, and printing to a PostScript
capable Imagen, but I got similar error from the printer as 1.b above.

Can anyone offer any advice as to how to get these files printed???  I know
that
Mac apps don't put out "standard" PostScript (if there is such a thing), and
that there is a known conversion from Mac version to a more standard version,
but I can't find any information anywhere.  Any help would be appreciated.

only computer available is an Intel-compatible running Windows.

We are networked, but I cannot get the Mac to recognize a
presentation saved by PowerPoint for Windows (v.2.0), nor can I get
PowerPoint for Windows to recognize a presentation saved by the Mac
application (v.2.0.1).

Is this possible?  Do I need to upgrade my PowerPoint versions on
the Mac/PeeCee or both?   Answers either direct e-mail or to

Problem: On boot-up the Mac offers either an 'error 1' message or an
'unimplemented trap' error, if he re-installs the applications from floppy all
is well until the next day when he boots up again!

Usual tricks have been tried, boot with extensions off, rebuild the desktop,
zap
the PRAM, etc

He's been running this software on a Mac II previously with no problems, my
guess is that the apps need upgrading for use with S7.1 - any comments?

I've experienced this problem myself with my PowerBook 100 when I had to
reinstall the system and only had access to System 7.1 (as opposed to version
7.0.1 which the machine came with). I believe that the 7.1 control panel is
programmed to not allow a RAM disk to be created on a machine that has
4 Megs or less installed.  If I remember correctly the system 7.0.1 control
panel wouldn't allow a RAM disk on 2 Meg machines.

Anyway options:
1) Install more RAM.
2) Get the System 7.0.1 control panel and use it instead of the 7.1.1
control panel. I will warn you that you should never open the 7.1.1 control
panel while the RAM disk you create is active as you will most likely lose

everything on the RAM disk.

SGI operates a ftp site at ftp.sgi.com which can be explored by anonymous
ftp.

Regarding transporting SGI images files (I assume you mean regular SGI rgb
files) to a mac platform, several routes are possible. SGI rgb files can be
converted into PICT files using the image utility topict. If you prefer to use
tiff files, the SGI drawing & presentation package "showcase" has options for
exporting rgb files in the TIFF format. Once converted into PICT or TIFF
format
you need to transfer the file over to the mac (use ftp or some other tool),
correct filetype if necessary (with a utility such as FileTyper), and open the
file with your favorite mac application.

Showcase will also import PICT (and TIFF?) files if you want to open image
files
>From the mac on a SGI.

More details can be found in the file grf/util/using-sgi-images.txt on sumex.

This is a flaw with the Apple Stylewriter and Stylewriter II drivers where
they cannot handle, for some bizarre reason, text that is rotated at 90
degrees. This is unique to Apple's drivers as I have seen great output from
a friend's Stylewriter running BetterWriter Drivers (GDT Softworks) which
not only handles rotated text properly but actually handles hair-lines
properly! I think it's Apple's goof-up and I have no idea how to avoid the
situation you described other than obtaining a copy from GDT of their
printer-driver. Certainly it is not the fault of the application program
that you are using to create the graph. Can you try and print the text at a
slight offset from 90 degrees? Say make it 90.5 or something like that?
That might just work.

I'm not sure if the problem is with the axis or with the associated text.
KaleidaGraph did have a problem printing rotated text on Stylewriters
( and ImageWriters), the text would a rather crude bitmap. The same if you
scaled your graph. If this is your problem it is solved in the new version
of KaleidaGraph, 3.01 or higher, released in June. Highly recommended upgrade
for several other reasons as well. 35$ including new manuals.
Hope this is what you want.

I use a Mac IIcx 5/40, System 7.1, 240MB LaCie external HD, and
MODE 32 for 10MB of extra RAM.  It works fine for me (no crashes,

I use White Knight (WK) at school and but it will not upload a "file" to a VAX
box. BTW I am not having a problem sending a TEXT file just the "Send file .."
command.

Z-modem on the VAX works fine when I upload a "file" from a DOS-PC (using
Procomm v2.0); but with WK it just "spins" with a "Holding for start" status
message. I can also see by a modem icon the VAX is sending a Z-modem, start,
move-it or whatever command to the Mac?

What's "holding" back my Mac and WK?

Any suggestion or comments?

My girlfriend runs a IIci 8/170 with an Apple 13" RGB monitor driven by
on-board video, System 7.0.1 (tuned,) with 8MB RAM, a Daystar Cache card,
and an NEC CDR-74 using its own software and she runs both Thomas and
Grandma for hours on end in her classroom without a hitch.

We were seriously considering upgrading her system to System 7.1 and would
like to know if Monty and his son are having this problem due to System 7.1
or not.  Please let us know.  We are curious because.....

At home I am playing with a Duo 230 12/120 running System 7.1 in a Duo Dock
attached to  a NEC CDR-74 using FWB CD Toolkit software and the only CD it
won't recognize is the "Timetable of History: Science and Inventions" CD

it is recognized in my girlfriend's machine?
